GHG and CO2 footprint

Sirromet has made the next jump into improving their current status of being environmental by commissioning Provisor to find out Sirromet’s CO2 footprint for the whole company, which includes vineyards, transport, winery, full office and restaurant functions, and thru to bottling, storage and also transport again to the retail sector. The process to extract data was pretty intense for most staff and the outcome so far is very good.

It is broken down into 3 areas, scope, #1, 2, 3 emissions. Scope # 1 is mainly power usage, and as you all know, we have a lovely building encumbering loads of different aspects under the banner of Sirromet. Scope # 1 was the worst under our audit, but we are putting plans in place to lower these to be as close as possible to being Carbon Neutral. Our other scopes 2 & 3 were of a high standard as far as emissions were concerned, so say tuned, much more to come under this heading.

WIND & SOLAR CONCEPTS

Scope # 1 (energy) in our CO2 footprint needs to be lowered. We’ve chosen to dig deeper into wind and solar power to one help reduce our footprint, help the climate change, and also to be be seen as a leader not only in great wines, but in also in environmental responsibility. Our first step in this respect will be to trial actual solar and wind renewable energy at our waste plant, as it’s a very consistent power use. We’ll let you know how this goes.

PET Bottles 187ml, 750ml

A new concept is happening within the wine industry, both internationally and domestically, and Sirromet is already onto it. We’re talking about our PET or plastic bottles. To look at them, they look like glass, but they generate far less CO2 in manufacture than glass and are also recyclable with less energy than glass. Plus, because they’re lighter than glass, they save transport weight and hence reduce transport energy.

They also offer a wonderful safety aspect, for everything from boating to sporting and music events, or airlines. The bottles do not change the taste of the wines, but at this stage, they have a limited shelf life of roughly eighteen months. This has a lot to do with making of the PET, but the technology is improving.
