The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) was founded in 1969 to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits.  Since then, WSET has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite of sought-after qualifications.

This is a fantastic result for Sirromet Wines, and a great opportunity to learn more about wine in a great systematic way, by taste, varietal, country, weather climate and so on. The course is ideal for staff, sommeliers, restaurant owners, bar managers, resort owners or wine lovers.

We currently offer the following courses on site at Sirromet Winery:

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines – Click here

A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine.

For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

What you’ll learn

The main types and styles of wine

  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics
  • How to store and serve wine
  • The principles of food and wine pairing
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

$400 (Includes booklet, wines, lectures and exam).

Requires at least 2-4weeks of self study of the WSET supplied booklet before sitting the 1 day course lectures. Level 1 course includes tasting of 6-8 wines, lectures, study booklet and exams.

A beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring wines and spirits for those working in the industry or wine and spirit enthusiasts.

For individuals seeking a core understanding of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties and important wine regions in which they are grown. You’ll learn about the styles of wines produced from these grapes as well as key classifications and labelling terminology. A basic overview of the key categories of spirits and liqueurs will also be provided. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

  • How wine is made
  • What factors influence wine style
  • The key white and black grape varieties and their characteristics
  • The important wine-producing regions of the world in which these grapes are grown
  • The production of sparkling, sweet, and fortified wines
  • Label terminology
  • Food and wine pairing principles
  • The principal categories of spirits and liqueurs, and how they are made

How to describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

$800 (includes books, wines, exams and lectures).

Requires at least 2-3 months of self study of the WSET supplied books before sitting the 3 day course lectures. Level 2 course includes tasting of 45-60 wines from around the world, lectures, study books, exams.

An advanced level qualification for professionals working in the wine industry and for wine enthusiasts.

For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making. Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

What you’ll learn

  • The key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
  • How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal
    • still wines of the world
    • sparkling wines of the world
    • fortified wines of the world
  • How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality
  • How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

$1400 (Includes books, wines, lectures and exam).

We require a minimum of 8 and a max of 15 people per course. Level 3 course includes tasting of 60-80 wines from around the world, lectures, study books, exams.

Adam Chapman - Chief Winemaker

Our educator is Adam Chapman. Sirromet Wines Chief Winemaker, Adam has over 30 years experience, having made wine in the Barossa, Hunter Valley, Granite Belt and South Burnett in Australia; Ardeche, Tournus, Pomerol and St Emilion in France.

Armed with wine qualifications from Melbourne University, AWRI and WSET, Adam has worked with many different grapes varieties, trellis designs, weather changes, soil types, winemaking styles over the years influencing his current winemaking style at Sirromet.

Adam thought it would be good to allow his knowledge to be placed down on a certified course. Adam is currently doing his WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits under his lecturer and mentor Meg Brodtmann-MW.
